Ah the sound of my 1991 Canon Sure Shot Max turning on for my next frame… did I mention it was the “max”? Not sure if you heard or not. Also not sure where the max piece comes into play, but this 35mm point & shoot is the near perfect daily companion for film photographers.

Don’t worry about being perfect here. A point & shoot film camera is the best for beginners and experts alike. Forget your settings. Toss in a fresh roll, listen to it auto spool, frame your shot, and let it fly. There’s nothing to do here except document. Just don’t forget the flash! Wait did he just say auto spool? Yes, that’s right. Buckle up for the features on this pocket sized beast.

Released in September of 1991 the Canon Sure Shot Max is a 35mm point & shoot film cam that boasts the following features:

  • 38mm f/3.5 lens

  • Autofocus

  • Self-timer

  • Built in flash & red-eye reduction

My one gripe with this camera in particular is the location of the viewfinder. It is severely offset from where the actual lens is. This led to multiple shots being off-framed from what my goal was whilst shooting the test roll. This is a very manageable issue to deal with and is very easily correctable when shooting vertical photos. Horizontal photos you can expect to frame your subject a little further to the right in the viewfinder to compensate for the offset.

I have full frame, mirrorless, DSLR, and SLR cameras and yet I still craved a point & shoot for its convenience. Something I can fit in my back pocket on a night out or for a sunrise exploration. I was checking my local camera shop websites, when I saw this one for $85 at Peace Camera in Raleigh, NC, and in the next 30 minutes I was the new owner. You can find these anywhere from $50 to $115 depending on where you look. Just ensure the camera has been tested before purchasing (especially online).

This lightweight and compact film camera is the perfect everyday companion for spontaneous moments. I find myself reaching for this camera more and more each day I own it. It’s sharp enough and it seems everyones a model when this one comes out… safe to say I never leave the house without it and find significant joy when shooting with the Canon Sure Shot Max.
